Viana do Castelo in North Portugal is an exposed river break that has fairly consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. The best wind direction is from the northeast. Tends to receive a mix of groundswells and windswells and the best swell direction is from the west. The river break offers both left and right hand waves. Good surf at all stages of the tide. Often Crowded. Surfing here means negotiating dangerous rips.
